Call tracking: do you know which call really came from Google?
For local businesses the most valuable lead arrives by phone — and usually stays invisible. Why hand-typed numbers kill your best Google Ads budget, and how call tracking fixes it.
Originally written in German — read it on visnakovs.de.
Someone searches Google for what you do, clicks your ad, lands on your site — and types your phone number into their mobile by hand. They call, you agree terms, you land a €5,000 job.
What does Google see? One click. No conversion. In the account the campaign looks like it produces nothing. Eventually you pause it — and kill your most profitable channel without noticing.
This happens in almost every local account I look at: the most valuable lead arrives by phone, and it’s simultaneously the most invisible one.
Why calls are the blind spot
Online forms are easy to track: submitted equals conversion. With the phone there are too many routes:
- Someone taps the
tel:number on mobile → still trackable. - Someone reads the number off the page and types it in themselves → invisible.
- Someone sees the ad on desktop and calls from a landline → invisible.
- Someone writes the number down and calls two days later → invisible.
In all the invisible cases, Google never learns that the click became a customer. Smart Bidding then optimises against you, because it’s working with half the truth.
The expensive misreading
“The campaign barely produces conversions” often means, in a local business, only this: “the campaign barely produces measurable conversions.” That’s an enormous difference — and exactly why good campaigns get switched off by mistake.
What call tracking actually does
Real call tracking works with dynamic phone numbers (dynamic number insertion, DNI). Simplified:
- Every visitor sees their own forwarding number on your website — it looks like a perfectly normal number.
- When they call, the call is passed straight through to your real number. You notice nothing, the customer notices nothing.
- The system remembers which visit — source, campaign, keyword, even the search query — belongs to that call.
So “anonymous call” turns into: “This call came via Google Ads, campaign ‘Emergency service’, keyword ‘…’ — and lasted 6 minutes.” You send that back to Google Ads as a conversion, and Smart Bidding finally optimises for what counts: calls that turn into customers.
My tool for it: WhatConverts
I’ve had a few call-tracking solutions in use. My clear favourite for local businesses is WhatConverts. Why:
- It captures calls, forms and chats in one place — the full lead picture, not just phone.
- For every lead you see source, campaign and keyword. You spot immediately which search terms bring real callers and which only cost budget.
- You mark leads as qualified or unqualified and assign a lead value — that quality flows back into Google Ads (value-based bidding instead of bidding blind on call volume).
- The connection to Google Ads and GA4 is straightforward.
No affiliate waffle: I recommend it because it works cleanly day to day and closes exactly the gap this post is about.
GDPR: short, but it matters
Call tracking is workable in Germany if you set it up properly: a data processing agreement with the provider, a note in your privacy policy, and call recordings only with consent. The key point: for attribution — which click led to the call — you don’t need any recording at all. The matching on its own gives you the biggest lever.
Foundation first, then call tracking
Before you set up call tracking, check whether the rest of your tracking measures cleanly — otherwise you’re building on soft ground: conversion tracking health check: 15 minutes to know if Google Ads measures properly.
And if you want to know whether your budget adds up at your value per call, my Google Ads calculator (in German) works out CPA, ROAS and break-even in about 60 seconds.
The bottom line
If your business lives off the phone and you track no calls, you’re making budget decisions on half the truth. Call tracking makes the most valuable lead visible — and Google starts optimising for real customers instead of for whatever it happens to be able to measure.
