What a Google Ads freelancer costs — and when it pays off

What a Google Ads freelancer costs next to an agency: the three pricing models, what you're actually paying for, and why a specialist pays off once the ad budget gets serious.

The cost of a Google Ads freelancer weighed against an agency retainer

“What does a Google Ads freelancer cost?” is the wrong opening question. The right one is: what am I paying for, and how much of it reaches my account? An hourly rate tells you very little about whether more profitable enquiries come in at the end of it.

The three common pricing models

An experienced Google Ads freelancer will usually bill one of these ways:

  • Monthly retainer — ongoing management at a fixed price. In the German-speaking market, €700–2,000 a month is typical for a specialist, depending on how complex the account is and how much budget runs through it.
  • Project fee — a clean tracking and campaign setup at a fixed price, say, with optional management afterwards. Good when what you need first is a solid foundation.
  • Hourly — for audits, training or one-off help. Sensible for clearly bounded jobs.

For comparison: a traditional agency tends to quote €1,500–5,000 a month, often plus a setup fee and a 6–12 month contract.

What you’re co-funding at an agency

The price gap isn’t a quality gap — it’s a structural one. An agency retainer carries new-business teams, several layers of account management, offices and tools. That’s overhead, and it does nothing for your account. With a freelancer the money goes into exactly one thing: work on your account, done by the person you actually talk to — not by a junior running twenty accounts in parallel.

The calculation that matters

Not “retainer A versus retainer B”, but: how much more profitable revenue does this management pull out of the same ad budget? Once the budget is serious, senior know-how is what decides your ROAS — and that’s exactly where a specialist pays for itself fastest.

When a freelancer genuinely makes sense

The more you put into Google Ads, the more expensive mistakes get — and the more someone who understands your account is worth. A freelancer is the right call when:

  • you’re moving serious ad budget and want growth, not just presence,
  • you’ve had enough of rotating contacts, slow response times and flattering reports,
  • your conversion tracking has to be clean so Smart Bidding optimises on real revenue — here’s how I track (in German),
  • you want results rather than an apparatus.

And when not? On very small budgets. Then doing it yourself with free tools (in German) is often the more honest route — I’d rather tell you straight that ongoing management doesn’t pay for itself yet.

What you should get, at any price

Before you sign anywhere, watch for three things: full access to your own accounts (Google Ads, GA4 and GTM belong to you), real transparency on every euro spent, and demonstrable focus on Google Ads and tracking rather than “all channels, none of them deeply”. What that looks like in practice is in the case studies (in German).
