Google Ads freelancer instead of an agency — seven reasons to switch

Most companies don’t leave their agency because a freelancer is cheaper. They leave because they feel like they’re putting more time into managing the agency than the agency puts into their account. Here are the seven triggers I hear most often — and how to tell the switch is overdue.

1. Your account lands with a junior

You get pitched by the senior. Day to day, your account is often handled by a junior running twenty others in parallel. With a specialist you always work with the same person — the one actually doing the optimising.

2. Your contact keeps changing

Agencies have churn. Every few months there’s a new face that has to “get to know” your account again, on your budget. Continuity isn’t a luxury, it’s the basis for good optimisation.

3. You’re paying for overhead you don’t need

New business teams, layers of account management, offices — all of it sits inside the retainer. On a serious ad budget that’s a lot of apparatus for very little extra performance. More on that in my cost comparison of freelancer vs agency.

4. Response times measured in days, not hours

“I’ll pass that to the team” — and then nothing happens for days. When the market moves or a campaign runs off the rails, hours matter, not tickets.

5. Reports that look good instead of being honest

Click counts, impressions, colourful charts — and you still don’t know whether revenue comes out at the end. Good management shows you every euro and every real conversion, not vanity metrics.

6. Tracking is a by-product, not a foundation

At a lot of agencies, conversion tracking (in German) is outsourced or superficial. Then Smart Bidding optimises on half the truth. Clean, GDPR-compliant tracking is the basis for everything else — not an add-on.

The concentration-risk argument you’ll hear most

“A freelancer is riskier than an agency.” In practice it’s often the other way round — at the agency nobody feels responsible. What actually protects you against dependency is clean documentation and full access to your own accounts. Both are standard with me.

7. Nobody tells you the uncomfortable truth

An agency earning on a retainer rarely tells you “this isn’t worth it for you right now”. A good specialist does exactly that — because they live off honest, long-term relationships, not contract terms.

How the switch runs cleanly

The move is less work than people expect, provided the accounts belong to you. What matters: full access to Google Ads, GA4 and GTM, an orderly handover, and a clear view of what has been working so far. How companies work with me is written up in the case studies (in German).
